Crowns

Crowns are planned when the tooth is very compromised due to decay or fracture. The dentist decides when full coverage over the tooth is necessary to preserve the tooth.

The crown (a.k.a. cap) fits snugly over the prepared tooth and covers it to the gum line.

Crowns on back teeth are usually porcelain baked over a metal base, giving strength to the porcelain.

All-Porcelain Crowns are usually reserved for front teeth, giving a more natural appearance.

Veneers

Veneers are a porcelain facing placed on front teeth. This is usually done in two visits. During the first visit, the teeth are prepared and impressions are taken. The porcelain veneers are then made by a dental laboratory and returned to the office. In the mean time, usually about 2 weeks, the patient will have acrylic temporary veneers. During the second visit, the dentist attaches the finished veneers fixed firmly to the teeth. Veneers can be used to change the appearance of the front teeth. Some patients will choose veneers rather than braces or whitening to obtain a beautiful smile in a very short period of time.

Bridges

Bridges are 3 or more crowns linked together to hide a missing tooth.

The two teeth on either side of a missing tooth space will be crowned, with a floating tooth hiding the empty tooth space.

This will be fixed permanently with dental cement and cannot be removed.

There is a metal frame for strength with tooth-colored porcelain baked over it and glazed for a natural appearance.

Inlays/Onlays

Inlays and Onlays are a more conservative option compared to a crown.

When a tooth needs partial coverage, a filling would not be sufficient, but a crown would remove healthy tooth structure.
